Krefeld Germany

Travel to Germany – Krefeld Germany

The city of Krefeld Germany is rich in history. Once known as Crefeld, the industrial contribution of the city gave it the nickname of the Velvet and Silk City. Krefeld Germany is in the eastern Uerdingen not far from the Rhine River. Krefeld is part of North Rhine-Westphalia and as such is near many interesting cities

Krefeld is just North of Dusseldorf and just South of Essen. Its convenient location makes Krefeld a popular tourist site for those who want to spend some time in classic Germany. If you do not want to find the tour sites on your own you can engage a local tour company for a river tour or any one of a number of other choices.  Krefeld Germany offers seasonal events, a castle and a wealth of historic sites to attract tourist and lure them away from the larger cities.

The first historic reference to Krefeld was in the 1100s but the town didn’t really begin to grow until the seventeenth century. In the 1300s the city belonged to the counts of Moers. Later it became part of the Kingdom of Prussia and eventually became Krefeld-Uerdingen, an independent city that kept that name until the 1940s when it was renamed Krefeld Germany. Today it has a population of nearly 250,000 people.

Like so many other cities the city of Krefeld Germany suffered significant damage during the Second World War. One of the most devastating losses was the Nazi destruction of the old synagogue. In September of 2008, the city opened its new synagogue, an impressive structure with room for over 300 worshippers. The only reminder of the old synagogue is the specially designed window which echoes the original window designed in 1928.

Today there are vestiges of the old city and of the cities that combined to create the new Krefeld. Visitors to the city will find many appealing attractions and a pace slightly slower than that of the larger German cities.
